Types of Caltech Sponsored Programs for Minors
Considering inviting minors to campus for an event, program or activity?
Start your planning with a call or email to Mitch Aiken [email protected] (626-395-4641) in Caltech's Center for Teaching, Learning and Outreach for guidance on protocols required for various scenarios. For example:
- If you are hosting a field trip or lab tour for a group of students and their chaperones, you would need to get approval from your Division Administrator or Department Manager and collect liability waivers from participants in advance.
- If you are planning a program that will bring students to campus for an extended class or activity, where the students would not be accompanied by their parent or chaperone, then other procedures would apply.
- If a student is coming to Caltech for a summer of research, then they would need to be registered through HR as Caltech Volunteers, which would involve background checks and Mandated Reporter training for mentors interacting with them, approval from the Caltech Environmental Health and Safety office and parental signatures.
- Overnight visits also bring an additional set of protocols and planning. Admissions and Athletic Recruitment visits by minors fall under a separate set of guidelines.
Each situation is different, so checking in early will help you determine what type of program or visit that you would like to offer, and your responsibilities related to the specific situation.
