Mandated Reporters
Guidelines:
California law requires employees of postsecondary institutions:
- Whose
duties bring them into contact with children on a regular basis or
- Who supervise employees whose duties bring them into contact with children on a regular basis
- Occurring
on the institution's premises or at an official activity or program
- To
law enforcement or child protective services as soon as practicably possible by
phone
- And
within 36 hours via a written Suspected Child Abuse Report.
- Doctors,
nurses, professional counselors
- Athletic
coaches, including assistant and graduate assistant coaches at postsecondary
institutions.
Caltech Policy:
"Every member of the Caltech community who knows of, or reasonably suspects, child abuse has a personal responsibility to report to Caltech security."
Make a Report:
- To
law enforcement or child protective services as soon as practicably possible by
phone
- And within 36 hours via a written
Suspected Child Abuse Report.
Liability:
- No: Liability for reasonable reporting (even if
you are wrong)
- Yes: Fines/jail for not reporting (or hindering an
employee from reporting).

Training:
Mandated reporters are identified by their divisions. Once HR is notified, the following will be initiated:
- On-line
Training "EDU: Protect Children" module
- A criminal background check
- Completion of Acknowledgement of Mandated Reporter Status
